Dr. John Shields of Cancer Care Specialists was awarded the 2017 C.H. Woods Award presented by the Washoe County Medical Society. The award recognizes a society member who best demonstrates the art of medicine and who has the “magic touch” when caring for patients.
Dr. Shields has been described at the “Godfather of Oncology” for his contributions to his profession. Dr. Shields and Dr. Steve Schiff founded Alpine Hematology-Oncology in 1978, and later merged with Reno Oncology Associates in 2015 to formulate Cancer Care Specialists.
Jeanie Catterson, retiring executive director of the Washoe County Medical Society, was recognized for her 25 years of service.
Catterson joined the organization as a part-time reception and became executive director in 1991 and was named executive director in 2004.
The honor, awarded by the outgoing WCMS president, is given to an individual, organization or company who over the past year has gone above and beyond the call of duty.
