Community sports: Jones takes second in Reno marathon

Cassandra Jones didn’t expect to record a qualifying time good enough for the Boston Marathon this soon. But Jones did that during the 26.2-mile marathon held at Reno’s Downtown River Run on May 2.

Jones, who lives in Reno and works in Carson City as a compliance investigator with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, finished second in the women’s division in the Reno Marathon. Jones, 27, finished in 3:31.00, a good enough qualifying time in her age division for the Boston Marathon.

“I have been wanting to qualify for the Boston Marathon,” Jones said. “I didn’t think that it was going to happen, so I was surprised.”

Runners in Jones age division who have a time of 3:35.00 or below can register for the Boston Marathon. Those with the fastest times are chosen to run in the Boston Marathon and with a time of 3:31.00, Jones said she believes she has a fast enough time to be selected. “I think I’ve got a good cushion,” she said.

But just to be sure, Jones said she may run in the Humboldt Bay Marathon in Eureka, Calif., in August in an attempt to post a qualifying time that will make sure she gets into the Boston Marathon before she has to register in September. If she is selected, Jones said she plans to run in the Boston Marathon next April.

Jones played soccer in college and continued running after college. She got more serious and ran her first half-marathon in the Silver State 50-50 three years ago. Since then, Jones has run a total of seven half-marathons and three marathons.

Seahawks defeat Steelers

The Seahawks edged the Steelers, 54-46, in the featured game of the Talents Carson City NFL Flag Football League last week.

The Seahawks went 2-0 on the week to improve to 5-7 on the season. Alan Mayoral scored 11 TDs in the two games and Aden McNabb had four TD tosses. Angela Escobedo had seven flag pulls, and Nassar Abdelhaddy and Paul Perez had six flag pulls each.

The Browns remained undefeated at 12-0 with wins over the Eagles and Patriots. Eduardo Orozco had nine TD passes and one TD and Victor Contreras scored seven times. Alex Myrehn and Javier Arrelano had nine flag pulls each, and Dayna Myrehn added seven stops.

The Raiders split two games and are at 7-4-1. Joey Altermerano had seven TD passes and one score, and Erick Vasquez and Michael Gullie accounted for five scores each. Luis Plasensia had nine flag pulls.

Christian Smith accounted for six TDs and Riley Geovaneti had five TDs for the 1-11 Steelers. The Eagles, despite three TDs by Ryan Galloway, lost twice last week. Tyler Williams had eight flag pulls and Ian Bowman added seven. The Patriots split two contests last week and are third at 5-6-1. William Ore scored five times and threw a scoring pass and Jacob Hanson threw three TD passes and scored once. Anthony Loyola had eight flag pulls and Sean Finn six.

Boykins wins at Eagle Valley

Kim Boykin shot a 55 to win Flight 1 low gross honors at Eagle Valley Golf Club. The format was throw out the par-5s.

Joyce Guy won low net in Flight 1 with a 42 and Suzie Zimmerli was a stroke back. Victoria DeVore won low gross in Flight 2 with a 79. Donna McKimmey was low net with a 44 and Jackie Allard had a 46. Gail Nelson won low gross in Flight 3 with a 78, Marie Werner was low net with a 41 and Pat Gilbert shot a 45.

Alexander golf clinic set for Sunday, tourney canceled

The annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic is set for Sunday at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

The clinic is free and open to children between 6 and 17, and their families. Registration starts at 10:30, and the clinic gets underway at 11:45. Peter Longo is putting on his annual trick-shot demonstration during the event. Refreshments will be served.

Local golf pros will be instructing at the clinic.

The Eagle Valley Men’s Club Tournament scheduled for Sunday has been canceled.

Carson Valley mixed event on Saturday

The Carson Valley Golf Club Couples League is having a tournament on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. The format is best ball, and you must have a GHIN handicap established to play.

The cost is $50 per person. It includes green fee, cart fee, $10 prize fund and lunch.

Bob Pemberton shot a net 73 to win top honors in Flight A for the Carson Valley Men’s Club. Kenny Smitreski was second with a 76.

Charles Poe shot 67 to win Flight B, three shots ahead of Mike Davis. Chris Willing won Flight C with a 65, five shots better than John Pearson.

Augie Pearson and Neal Notly won closest to the hole.

Grass volleyball tournament slated

The ninth annual Carson Valley Days Grass Volleyball Tournament is set for June 11 at Lampe Park.

There’s an adult division and youth division. Varsity volleyball players are welcome to play.
