Row in Empire: Rough language and hard knocks report a landlord and teamster at Empire, the city of “mills.” Teamsters injured a cow belonging to the landlord, and when he wouldn’t pay, hit him with a piece of quartz. The landlord mounted the saddle mule and started in pursuit of the teamster.

Episcopal convention: After a warm and long debate the Episcopal convention decided to refuse women the right to vote in church matters — the clergymen will be consistent and decline henceforth to permit the women to contribute to presentation purses or do the hard work of socials, fairs and entertainments gotten up to meet the expense entailed by the pastor’s salary, etc. (The Daily Report)

Goddess of Liberty and Carnival Queen: The committee has decided to have the queen and goddess be selected by popular vote. There are so many beautiful girls in the city that people are getting cross-eyed trying to look at them all … five cents a vote.

Hospital pledges: The Capitol Post No. 4 of the American Legion pledged $1,000 toward the building the proposed community hospital. Pledges have reached $40,000, which includes the $30,000 pledged by Maj. Max Fleischmann.

Auditions for “As You Like It” will take place at the Brewery Arts Center. Auditioners are asked to bring two contrasting monologues, one Shakespeare and one contemporary.
