Taylor Saarem, Nicolaus Salm and Megan Tingle of Carson High School were honored as the 2017 Nevada Parent Teacher Association (PTA)’s Battle Born scholarship winners.
Both Saarem and Salm earned $500 scholarships while Tingle earned the highest $1,000 scholarship.
Students from Carson City made up nearly half of the 2017 winners — only seven candidates in the state were awarded scholarships.
Additionally, the Nevada PTA honored nine students with awards of excellence and merit in its annual Reflections Art and Literature Contest.
The nationwide program encourages students to explore their writing and artistic talents through theme-based arts. Students submit works in any of six categories including literature, photography, visual arts (2-D and 3-D), musical composition, dance choreography and film production. Judging is based on creativity, artistic merit and interpretation of the theme. The theme for 2016-2017 was “What is Your Story?” Students were permitted to submit as many entries, in as many categories, as they preferred.
The following students earned state recognitions:
Chandler Blueberg, Award of Merit — Music
