Big tree: A 40-minute walk to the west will take you to a solitary tree that is six feet in diameter and a hundred feet in height with 80-foot limbs. Its gnarled limbs, crooked branches and twisted boughs encircle eight feet across and been there for centuries, and its shade would cover two town lots. (Monarch of Eagle Valley)

The Kid to the Colors (World War I, A Poem — in part)

The Kid has gone to the colors and we don’t know what to say;

The Kid we have loved and cuddled stepped out for the Flag. Today.

We thought him a child, a baby with never a care at all

But his country called him man-size and the kid has heard the call.

His dad, when he told him shuddered, his mother — God bless her! Cried;

Yet, blest with a mothers-nature, she wept with a mother pride.

But he whose shoulders straightened was Granddad — for memory ran

To years when he too, a youngster, was change by the Flag, to a man!

War on loafers: Newspapers in Reno are making a war on low characters that infest the sidewalks and make filthy remarks about ladies they pass on the street. They are a new class of characters and come from camp following the Colorado gamblers — the worst riffraff. The town should be cleared of them.

Mrs. William Fletcher fell at her home on W. Fifth Street. X-rays were taken to determine her injury.
