Petrified whale: On the top of the highest peaks of the mountains by San Jose lie the petrified bones of a whale. It probably broke its neck or produced a concussion of the brain by butting his head against the wall of rocks while chasing small fish. (San Jose Patriot)

Lew Johnson Co.: The next theatrical attraction is the Lew Johnson Company. His company is composed of genuine African-American artists of recognizable ability and strict moral character. Their songs and jokes are new and catchy and their dancing unsurpassable. (Pasadena, California Weekly)

Bread baking prizes: The school of domestic science is one of the most practical at the state university. The annual bread-baking contest took place and the honorary board of visitors assembled to partake in the dainty refreshments. There were 75 loaves baked to a delicious brown. Miss Helen Fulton of Reno was the first-prize winner and received $10. The second and third prizes were won by Miss Maud Swain and Miss Theresa Crane. No department in the university meets the respect and support than that of domestic arts and science.

100 Years Ago

Memorial Day: The weather was beautiful and a large parade assembled in front of the state Capitol building. The parade was headed by the Carson City Band and followed by the Grand Army of the Republic, Custer Relief Corps, and Spanish-American War veterans. Judge H. F. Bartine delivered the address, Charles Ruf, of the Orphans Home, recited Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech.

Memorial Day: Ceremonies will mark the observance of Memorial Day and will include Capital Post No. 4 of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
