A donation-funded project recently installed headstones on 14 graves that were previously unmarked at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
More than a dozen unnamed graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery are properly marked thanks to the Lone Mountain Cemetery Headstone Project.
Through donations from the public, the project was able to purchase and place 14 headstones at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
The project’s founder, Melinda Cash, said she received donations from the public, friends, and family.
Mike Denson of Cornerstone Monuments donated his time and much of the cost of these headstones to make the purchase possible.
Cash started taking photos of the headstone at the cemetery several years ago and noticed many of the graves had no memorial marker. In some cases, the headstones were damaged beyond repair, others were missing or stolen.
Cash made it her mission to put a headstone on every grave that could be identified. Hundreds more, she said, may never be identified because the records for the locations no longer exist.
Some of the unmarked graves contain the remains of Carson City’s earliest pioneers.
“I’m hoping someday we will be able to construct some type of memorial with the names of those whose grave locations have been lost over the years,” Cash said.
The headstone project is supported by the nonprofit Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation (FCCPR). Donations can be mailed in the care of FCCPR for the benefit of the Lone Mountain Headstone Project, P.O. Box 3266, Carson City 89702-3266.
