150 Years Ago

Thanksgiving sermon: Religious services will be held in the Methodist Church with Rev. A. F. White providing the discourse. The subject will be “Our cause for thankfulness as individuals, as a community, as a State, and as a Nation.” A fruitful theme, and the ability of the speaker to treat the subject truthfully and eloquently will have an audience sufficient to fill the church edifice. (Thanksgiving was held on Nov. 28 in 1867).

All sorts: The storm signals are flying from the dome of the Capitol.

It is suggested that the excavations of the government building be completed, the water turned on and an ice skating pond made of it. (During construction of the old post office, now Laxalt building).

There is a man well known in this city who has a habit of beating his wife. Some of his neighbors talk of having him arrested.

Leisure Hour: The program for the regular weekly meeting of the Leisure Hour Club will be: “Sound in Reference to the Telephone,” by Mr. Davis and “The World for the Week,” by Mr. Mooney.

Sale of Christmas trees: Trees will go on sale in the Pozzi warehouse on South Carson Street according to 20-30 Club officials. Prices range from 50 cents to $2. Four hundred trees are available for Carson residents.

20 Years Ago

The museum presents a program on the Donner Party and the Breen family. Margaret Breen was born in County Carlow, Ireland, and departed from Independence, Mo., for California in the spring of 1846, with her husband and seven children. The Breen family was one of only two families of the Donner Party to survive. Margaret Breen will be portrayed by Doris Dwyer.
