John Agather, chairman of the RARA Board of Directors, will step down from his post effective October 1 — after this week’s annual races, the Reno Air Racing Association said Tuesday. In a statement, Gather said, “It has been an absolute privilege and honor to serve as Chairman of the Reno Air Racing Association Board of Directors for the past three years. The time has come, however, to step down and allow someone new the opportunity to take this national treasure to the next level. When I was elected in 2014, there was great doubt the event could continue due to the economic pressure it faced. "However, with proper management adjustments and cost controls, we are now holding our third event since then, which will have an economic impact of nearly a quarter billion dollars for the region,” he said. "I leave knowing we have an excellent staff and Board of Directors. My successor, Fred Telling, brings an immense amount of talent, knowledge and capability.” Fred Telling, a current RARA board member, will become Chairman of the Board effective October 1, according to a news release Tuesday. Telling joined the board in December of 2016 and has served, and will continue to serve, as a member and president of the T-6 racing class.
