Carson City supervisors to consider property for open space

The Board of Supervisors on Thursday will vote to accept a grant to acquire 206 acres to be designated as open space.

The property south of the Timberline Subdivision and Vicee Canyon is appraised at $501,000, and would be purchased with the $250,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant and an equal match by Carson City from the Quality of Life – Open Space budget.

The acquisition has drawn a lot of public support in large part because it will enable the city to connect the existing trail system to and through the property.

The board will also vote to approve the Open Space Work Plan for the current fiscal year. The plan includes the disc golf course and trail work at Silver Saddle Ranch, JohnD Winters Centennial Park, and Prison Hill Recreation Area as well as several acquisitions, including the Vicee Canyon area acres and possibly 100 acres of Clear Creek area property owned by Nevada State Lands.

The Carson City Weed Coalition will present an update on noxious weed control work and treatments on about 750 acres, including Carson City Fairgrounds, Old Buzzy’s Ranch, and Linear Ditch Trail.

The board will interview three candidates to make an appointment to the Planning Commission for a spot recently vacated by Candace Stowell.

The supervisors will vote to appoint Jean Perpich for a four-year term as the public guardian. Deborah Marzoline retired on Aug. 3 and Adriana Fralick, interim deputy city manager, has been serving as the acting public guardian since.

Three ordinances are before the board. An ordinance on commercial banners, flags, and A-frame signs, and an ordinance extending the deadline for the Clearview Ridge Planned Unit Development tentative map are both being heard a second time. An ordinance on sewer pipe design is being heard for the first time.

The board will also vote to adopt a resolution of intent to issue $7 million in bonds to complete construction of the east-west water transmission line to the Quill Water Treatment Plant.
