Chains, snow tires on Friday morning commute; WNC closed

Update, Friday, 7:30 a.m.: WNC Carson City and Douglas Campuses are closed today, Feb.15 due to weather. Douglas (90 minutes) and Lyon (two hours) schools are also on delay. Carson schools were closed today due to a previously scheduled day off. Update: Friday, 6 a.m. Snow covered roads have caused Western Nevada College to cancel classes before 10 a.m. Carson City Schools were already closed for today. Chains and snow tires are required on all major thoroughfares . Check NVRoads.com before traveling for latest conditions. The winter storm is expected to continue to drop snow until noon with the chance of it continuing into this afternoon. UPDATE, Thursday, 9 p.m. One person is dead after a fatal crash on Galena Creek Bridge in the northbound lanes, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. NHP says 10-15 cars were involved. UPDATE, Thursday, 4 p.m. According to nvroads.com, the requirement of chains or snow tires through Washoe Valley has been lifted. Traffic cameras show wet conditions but no snow on the roadway. UPDATE, Thursday, 2:10 p.m. The Nevada Department of Transportation's website (nvroads.com) indicates chains or snow tires are required for travel through Washoe Valley. Conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate through the night and Friday morning. Douglas County reports it has been responding to several reports of minor flooding in the Carson Valley and there is water and minor debris on the roadways in many areas. Dispatch will be responding to all calls based on priority. Residents can report flooding in Douglas County by calling 775-782-5126. EARLIER POSTS: Rain is meeting Carson City commuters on this Valentine's Day morning. The rain is expected to turn to snow by early afternoon. The rain then snow will impact afternoon commutes and Friday morning commutes. Travel over the Sierra passes will be greatly impacted by the storm system. Check NVRoads before driving. The Carson River rose about 2.5 feet over night but is still to remain below flood level. For more information on the storm: https://www.weather.gov/rev/ In Lyon County, Emergency Management and Road Department personnel are monitoring storm drainage throughout the Highway 50 corridor and South County, according to County Manager Jeff Page. "Currently a number of drainages are taking water as designed and so far there have been no reports of property damage. Lyon County is watching the Atlas Retention Basin in southwest Dayton. After 2017 Crews repaired the retention basin and so far the basin is doing its job and holding back storm water," Page said. "Crews are notifying residents in the west end of the Rancho's of south east Dayton that there is a potential for minor to moderate flooding and that can change based upon weather conditions." Also, water is making its way down the Virginia Range to the Tahoe Avenue Canal which dumps the water into Lahontan Reservoir. Crews report water over River Road in Dayton and are advising the public to stay out of the area. The River Road flooding comes from the Six Mile Canyon Drainage and is flowing through to the Rolling A Open Space.

MINDEN — The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Advisory until 7 p.m. for the following:

• Alpine County

• Placer County

• El Dorado County

• Sierra County

• Nevada County

• Southern Washoe County

• Douglas County

• Carson City

Douglas County has had reports of minor flooding in the Carson Valley. Low water crossings are also bringing water across roadways in some locations. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Road Department is currently out monitoring flood prone areas. Residents may not see a crew in their community immediately; however, Douglas County Road Crews and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department will be responding to all calls based on priority. Residents can report flooding in Douglas County by calling 775-782-5126.

Additional heavy rainfall this afternoon may cause rises in smaller creeks and streams throughout the region with minor urban flooding possible. There will be a break in the precipitation intensity this evening, but additional heavy rainfall is likely on Thursday before snow once again likely comes to the Valley floor.

Water is coming over the dip section on Nye Drive in Minden. The closure is at 2590 Nye Drive until further notice.

Carson City Public Works crews are currently assessing drain inlets and opening storm drains. At the moment only flood prone areas are experiencing minor, localized flooding.

City officials encourage residents to prepare as necessary, as weather conditions can rapidly change. Check nearby storm drains and remove any blockage if possible. Self-filling sandbag locations are stocked with bags and sand; bring your own shovel.
