The “great resignation” is just one of the issues affecting commerce, but when it impacts school-age children who have no Washoe County School District drivers to operate school buses, we’re talking about a very dire problem.
There are many reasons that capable individuals have chosen to retire, seek other employment, remain at home with their own children, or just drop out of the workforce. That’s an entire topic in itself.
But this column is a “call to action” for those who value the education of our young, who understand these kids need to be in their classrooms, and can collaborate to resolve a crisis not of our students’ making.
We all know someone looking for gainful employment, particular an occupation that comes with extensive benefits and rewarding outcomes.
We all know organizations that are willing to train drivers, equip them with the skills and commercial driver’s license certifications they need to operate buses. We all know companies that have fleets and trained professionals who might be willing to drive a school bus when their routes are done. And perhaps, the business community, most versatile and willing to resolve a crisis when necessary, might come to together and address this problem that has so dramatically affected thousands of kids who want to be together in school, on the playground, and with their revered teachers.
The Reno + Sparks Chamber wants to hear from anyone who wants more information about becoming a bus driver for the Washoe County School District. Someone who wants health insurance, retirement savings, and the joy of doing something so important for the community.
Call 775-636-9550 and ask for me.
