Caterpillar has long been recognized as the industry leader with the world’s largest autonomous fleet of haul trucks. Reaching a significant milestone of 500-plus Cat autonomous trucks in operation worldwide is an exciting achievement, particularly for the mining industry. Future plans include scaling autonomy into quarry/aggregates and construction industries’ product lines with competitive offerings.

Cashman Equipment, the Caterpillar equipment dealer in Nevada and the Eastern Sierras, has provided surface and underground mining solutions for over 90 years. Nevada is a top producer for mineral mining and is home to some of the world’s largest mining operations. To meet the needs of the area, Cashman has committed to supplying a substantial number of Cat autonomous trucks over the next three years. New and existing mining customers have expressed their aim to add driverless vehicles to their fleet.

"Cashman Equipment is a long-time partner in the mining industry throughout Nevada, from equipment to parts and services. Adding a fleet of driverless haul trucks and other products makes mining a lot safer and more productive, and that's our aim with every piece of equipment we sell or rent," said Todd Gilligan, vice president of sales, marketing and rental, Cashman Equipment.

Caterpillar has been investing in autonomous development for decades. From 1994 to 1995, Caterpillar ran the first two prototype Cat 777C autonomous mining trucks at a Texas limestone quarry, where they successfully hauled more than 5,000 production loads over a 2.6-mile course. Then in 1996, MINExpo guests witnessed a live autonomy demonstration via satellite from Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center. And that was just the beginning.

Cat autonomous mine sites operate 24/7 on three continents. At year-end 2021, customers using Cat Command technology had safely hauled more than 4 billion tonnes and traveled over 145 million kilometers autonomously — significantly more than any competitor.
