Department of Business and Industry director Terry Reynolds has appointed Brett Harris as Nevada labor commissioner.
The labor commissioner oversees the agency responsible for the application and enforcement of wage and hour laws, employment of minors, public works and prevailing wage, private employment agency licensing and the state apprenticeship council.
Harris most recently served three years on the state’s government Employee Management Relations Board (EMRB), which resolves collective bargaining disputes filed by local and state employees, employee organizations and local governments through an administrative hearing process.
She is a long-time resident of Nevada, growing up in Boulder City and graduating from Las Vegas Academy. Harris has a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in politics from New York University and a J.D. from the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
After being admitted to the Nevada bar in 2011, she worked for local firms in southern Nevada before starting her own practice in 2017. Harris primarily focused her law practice on criminal defense, but she also represented and defended clients in a broad range of civil actions, including personal injury, business litigation, and medical malpractice.
