Borda wool goes from Gardnerville to the Olympics

A little piece of Carson Valley will make its debut at the Paris Olympics later this month.

Gardnerville’s Borda Land and Sheep Co. is one of several contributors to Shaniko Wool Co. in Oregon, which is supplying wool for Ralph Lauren’s Team USA’s opening ceremony parade uniforms for the 2024 Olympics.

Generally, Borda sheep are in the news for eating grass in the area around Carson City to prevent wildfires. But the Gardnerville company supplies wool from their sheep to a variety of outlets.

The Borda family was featured in a documentary directed by University of Nevada, Reno student and Douglas resident Kat Fulwider, who is among 16 Reynolds School of Journalism students heading to the Olympics this month.

Accompanied by five members of the Reynolds School faculty, the students will attend events like soccer, tennis, rugby, water polo, triathlon and more.

In addition to in-depth coverage of the games, students will further their global journalism skills like culture reporting in foreign locales, covering gender and inclusivity and the logistics and economics of major global events.
