Retailers in Nevada are ramping up hiring efforts ahead of the traditional surge in holiday shopping, with the Retail Association of Nevada estimating the addition of 3,900 seasonal positions in the Silver State.

Nationwide, workers have access to seasonal opportunities that could transition into full-time roles. Non-store employers are leading hiring expectations, with Amazon planning to hire 250,000 seasonal workers and UPS increasing its hiring target to 125,000, up from 100,000 last year.

In-store retailers have also detailed their seasonal hiring plans. Target aims to hire 100,000 seasonal workers across its 1,963 locations, maintaining the same level as last year.

Macy’s plans to add over 31,500 seasonal employees for its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, a decrease from the 38,000-position target last year.

Bath & Body Works, Burlington Coat Factory, JCPenney, and Dick’s Sporting Goods have set hiring targets of 30,000, 24,000, 10,000, and 8,000 seasonal workers, respectively.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. projected retailers will add 520,000 seasonal jobs in the last three months of the year.

While this figure was higher than the 509,300 seasonal positions in 2022, it was below the 564,200 seasonal hires in 2023 and was the second lowest total since 2009.

Labor expert Andrew Challenger emphasized seasonal job growth might be influenced by economic fluctuations, potentially leading to difficulties in filling positions or reduced demand if the economy slows and consumer spending declines.
