The Desert Research Institute has long been a leader in scientific research focused on environmental sustainability. A recent significant collaboration is with the Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine — a National Science Foundation-funded initiative dedicated to advancing sustainability innovations in water, energy, air, and advanced manufacturing across the rapidly growing southwest.
As the region faces increasing challenges related to weather extremes, population growth, and industrial expansion, SWSIE serves as a vital ecosystem where research institutions, industries, communities, and policymakers collaborate to drive economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability. DRI, as a co-lead research institution, plays an essential role in this effort by contributing its expertise in hydrologic sciences, atmospheric research, and environmental technology.
What is SWSIE?
SWSIE is a partnership-driven initiative designed to accelerate the commercialization of sustainability-focused innovations in Nevada, Utah and Arizona. These states are experiencing the highest population growth rates in the U.S., along with increased demand for water, energy, and industrial resources. At the same time, the region faces extreme climate challenges, including persistent droughts and rising temperatures.
SWSIE is led by four major research institutions:
• Arizona State University
• Desert Research Institute
• University of Nevada, Las Vegas
• University of Utah
With more than 100 partners, including community colleges, nonprofits, industrial companies, utilities, and government agencies, SWSIE is building a regional ecosystem of sustainability-focused innovation.
As a globally recognized environmental research institution, DRI provides critical expertise and research capabilities that help SWSIE drive technological advancements in water, energy, air, and advanced manufacturing.
Real-World Impact: SWSIE’s Innovation Funding
One of the most tangible ways SWSIE fosters sustainability is by funding startups and research projects that have the potential to drive meaningful change. Recently, SWSIE:
• Awarded $1.5 million in Innovation Grants to eight startup companies in the region.
• Distributed 15 smaller Catalyst Grants across Nevada, Utah and Arizona to support emerging research and early-stage innovations.
These grants help translate cutting-edge research into real-world applications, accelerating the transition from lab discoveries to commercial solutions.
Looking Ahead: The Future of DRI and SWSIE
With continued urban growth, climate challenges, and resource demands, the need for sustainability-focused innovation is greater than ever. Through its leadership in SWSIE, DRI will continue to drive transformative research, foster new partnerships, and support technological advancements that help create a more sustainable and prosperous future for the southwest.
As water, energy, air quality, and manufacturing sustainability remain top priorities, DRI’s role in shaping the region’s environmental and economic future will only grow stronger. With its commitment to scientific excellence and innovation, DRI stands as a key player in ensuring that the southwest remains resilient, sustainable, and forward-thinking for generations to come.
